Palestine in Philadelphia

Everyday I explore a different part of Philadelphia.

Everyday I yearn for a sense of home and belonging.

Everyday I find a new way to see Palestine in Philadelphia.

All too familiar with the feeling of pain and grief for my people across the seas, occupied in their

own land trying to break free.

All too familiar with the feeling of pain and misery my brothers and sisters across the city fight

for peace, trying to break free from hostile environments, crimes and unsaid disputes on the

corner of the stoop.

Corner stores in different parts of the city remind me of the different small stores in villages.

Neighbors sharing whispers about the neighborhood gossip, remind me of the mamas in thobes

talking about the catastrophe at the family event in the next village over.

Beautiful works of art on the side of brick buildings remind me of the talented young people with

the ability to learn new trends before they become trends in occupied land.

Different faiths coexisting in different corridors in the City of Philadelphia remind me of the

peaceful coexisting faiths in the hills of Nablus and Ramallah who stand side by side with one

another.

Palestine in Philadelphia – I love you both.

لم أستطع التوقف وظللت أبحث لساعات. صور المناظر الطبيعية لأريحا، عندما تنظر من منظور بعيد، تصور أرضًا شاسعة وخضراء فارغة، أو مع عدد قليل من الناس الذين بالكاد تستطيع رؤيتهم. في حين أن أريحا هي أقدم مدينة في العالم، إلا أن هويتها تكمن في تراثها الزراعي. ولكن مع أخذ ذلك في الاعتبار، فإن التأطير والمنظور المستمر في الصور يعكس نظرة خارجية، مما جعلني متحمسًا للتساؤل وتجربة الصور الأرشيفية التي وجدتها.
يأتي هذا العمل من منطلق اهتمامي بالبحث عن طرق للتدخل في الأرشيف والمطالبة بملكيته لنا كفلسطينيين. في هاتين الصورتين، أقوم بدمج الصور الأرشيفية التي تم العثور عليها لجيريكو مع أرشيف عائلتي، مما يؤدي إلى إنشاء وملء الفجوات من أجل استعادة سلطة الصورة.

5812 miles away from home, I typed Jericho- Palestine. I don’t recall the initial reason that made me try to search for my city on ebay, but I recall the first image that I found. A poster of the Winter Palace Hotel, which is exactly on the land I call home.  

I couldn’t stop, and kept looking for hours. landscape images of Jericho, looking from a far perspective, depicting vast and green empty land, or with few people that you barely can see. While Jericho is the oldest city in the world, its identity lies in its agricultural heritage. But with that in mind, the continuous framing and perspective in the images is reflecting an outsider gaze, which made me eager to question and experiment with the archival images I found. This work is coming from my interest in looking for ways to intervene with the archive and claim its ownership to us as Palestinians. In these two images, I am combining archival found images of Jericho with my family archive, creating and filling the gaps in order to reclaim the authority of the image.

أودّ أن أتوجه بالشكر لكلٍّ من: مكتب شؤون المهاجرين، ومكتب ممثلي المدينة، ومكتب رئيس البلدية، على حضورهم اليوم لدعم الفلسطينيين في اليوم الدولي للتضامن مع الشعب الفلسطيني، لنحتفل معاً بالمساهمات الغنيّة التي يقدمها الفلسطينيون حول العالم. أودّ أن أشكر كل شخص منكم على تواجده هنا ليتضامن مع الشعب الفلسطيني. نحن الآن نعدّ رابع مدينة في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية التي تعترف رسميًا بالشعب الفلسطيني. هذا حدث غير مسبوق. إنها لحظة تاريخية ليس فقط بالنسبة للفلسطينيين ولكن بالنسبة لنا جميعًا نحن سكان فيلادلفيا القادمين من جميع مناحي الحياة 

أن تتضامن مع الشعب الفلسطيني يعني أن تؤمن بالسلام والعدالة والمساواة. أن تتضامن مع الشعب الفلسطيني يعني أن تقف مع رُسُل المجتمع الموثوقين، والناخبين، والطلاب، والمهنيين… كَوْني أمريكية فلسطينية، جعلني أدرك أن العالم سيحتاج دائمًا إلى الفلسطينيين. ستحتاج فيلادلفيا دائمًا إلى الفلسطينيين. دعوني أخبركم لماذا: لأنه لا يمكن إيقافنا. إيماننا بأننا سنتمكن من رؤية الضوء في نهاية النفق مهما كان ذلك النفق مظلمًا. علمنا بأن هنالك طريقة ما للخروج مهما بدا الموقف صعباً. وإن سقطنا، نهضنا مجدداً. 

بصفتي شابة أمريكية فلسطينية، كان التعريف عن هويتي أثناء نشأتي دائمًا ما يشكل صراعاً بالنسبة لي. كنت أخشى أن أشرح عن أصلي، عن أننا موجودون، وأننا بشر. سريعًا ومع مرور الأيام، أصبحت أتوق أن أخبر الناس عن فلسطينيتي المتعمقة في جذوري، وعن الأشياء الاستثنائية التي رأيتها وقدمتها وما زلت أقدمها في مسيرتي الفلسطينية.

كشابة فلسطينية، أقف معكم هنا اليوم، لأخبركم جميعاً أنكم أنتم الآن فلسطينيون أيضًا. كفاحكم هو كفاحي، وانتصاراتكم هي انتصاراتي. وسأفعل ما بوسعي لننهض معاً. هذا ما يعنيه لي أن تكون فلسطينياً “فيلاديلفيّاً”. هذا يعني أننا عندما نناضل من أجلنا ومجتمعاتنا، سأقف معكم، وعندما نحتفل بانتصاراتنا للديمقراطية في مدينة المحبة والمودة الأخوية، سأحتفل معكم بزغرودة فلسطينية، وعندما تبكون وتظنون أنه لا توجد طريقة للخروج من المِحنة، سوف أحثّكم على النهوض بكلماتي عن السلام والإقرار بوجودكم وبحقكم في التضامن أيضًا. هذا ما يعنيه لي أن أكون فلسطينية.

أنا فخورة جداً بالوقوف هنا بين ممثلي المجتمع المحلي،  والمسؤولين المنتخبين، وجيراني، لنتضامن جميعاً مع شعبي الفلسطيني الذي انتظر طويلاً حتى يتم الاعتراف به. سنكافح أكثر لضمان سماع صوتنا ورؤية قضيتنا. هذا الكفاح لا يقتصر على إخوتي وأخواتي الفلسطينيين والفلسطينيات، ولكن إخوتي وأخواتي العرب، وإخوتي وأخواتي السود، وجيراني، ومجتمعي، وكل من هم هنا في فيلادلفيا، و لآي شخص يحتاج إلى صوت. أعلم أن هذه لن تكون المرة الأخيرة التي نقف فيها هنا لنعترف ونتعرف على مجتمع غني وجميل

قال الباحث الفلسطيني إدوارد سعيد: “لا تقتصر السلطة في نهاية المطاف على القوة العسكرية بل هي القوة الاجتماعية المنبثقة عن الديمقراطية، والقوة الثقافية الناتجة عن حرية التعبير والبحث، والقوة الذاتية التي تخوّل لكل عربي وعربية أن يكونوا مواطنين كاملي الحقوق لا مجرد ماشية ضمن قطيع كبير للأغنام.”

اسمي جود غازي حسين، من مواليد رام الله، فلسطين. من قرية صغيرة تدعى عين يبرود، أنا فلسطينية “فيلادلفية”. من قلب المدينة التي تدق أجراس حريتنا واستقلالنا، أؤمن بقوة الديمقراطية. سأظل واقفة متضامنة اليوم وكل يوم من أجل الشعب الفلسطيني. آمل أن تنضموا إلي اليوم وتقفوا متآزرين ليس معي فقط ولكن مع كل أولئك الذين يسعون لتحقيق العدالة والتصدي للظلم. كما قال المناضل الأممي مارتن لوثر كينج ذات مرة: “الظلم في أي مكان هو تهديد للعدالة في كل مكان. نحن عالقون في شبكة لا مفر منها من التبادلية، مقيدون في ثوب مصير واحد. كل ما يؤثر على المرء بشكل مباشر، تؤثر جميعها بشكل غير مباشر …”

My name is Jude Husein. I serve as Chairwoman of Jobs and Economics for the Mayor’s Philadelphia Youth Commission, I’m a former United Nations Youth Delegate, Community activist, professional and more importantly – I’m a Palestinian born American Philadelphian… Yes, it’s a thing and I’m a proud Palestinian American Philadelphian. 

I would like to thank the Office of Immigrant Affairs, City Representatives Office, and the mayor’s office for coming and supporting a Palestinian community on this International Day of Solidarity where across the world we are celebrating the rich contributions of the Palestinian people. Specifically, I would like to thank each single one of you for being out here and standing in solidarity with the Palestinian people. We are now the fourth city in the United States of America to formally acknowledge the Palestinian people. This is groundbreaking. This is a historical moment not just for the Palestinian community but to all of us as Philadelphians from all walks of life.

To stand with the Palestinian people means you stand with peace, justice, and equality. To stand with the Palestinian people means you stand with trusted community messengers, voters, students, professionals, and everything in the in between. 

As a Palestinian American, I have found that the world will always need Palestinian’s. Philadelphia will always need Palestinian’s and let me tell you why: We are unstoppable. We believe that there is a light no matter how dark the tunnel may be. We know that there is a way no matter how tough a situation can seem, and we rise no matter how hard we fall.

As a young Palestinian American identifying was always a struggle, growing up I would dread explaining where I was from, explaining that we exist, that we are human. Fast forward, I can’t wait to tell someone how Palestinian I am, the kinds of remarkable things I have seen, done and continue to do. 

As a Palestinian I stand here today, with you all extending myself to all of you to tell you, you are Palestinian now too. Your struggles are my struggles, and your wins are my wins, and I will do what I can to uplift you in any way I can – that is what being a Palestinian Philadelphian means to me. It means that when we are fighting for ourselves, our communities, I will stand with you, when we are celebrating our wins of democracy in the City of Brotherly love and sisterly affection, I will give you a Palestinian hahee and when you cry and think that there is no way, I will lift you with my words of peace and acknowledgment that you exist, and you deserve solidarity too. That is what being a Palestinian means to me.

 I am so proud to stand amongst my community representatives, elected officials and neighbors in solidarity for the Palestinian community that has long waited to be recognized. We will struggle some more to ensure we are heard and seen but not just for my Palestinian brothers and sisters, but my Arab brothers and sisters, my black brothers and sisters, my neighbors, my community, and everyone in the between here in Philadelphia and anyone that needs a voice. I know this won’t be the last time we stand here to recognize a beautiful, rich community

Palestinian scholar Edward Said said “Power, after all, is not just military strength. It is the social power that comes from democracy, the cultural power that comes from freedom of expression and research, the personal power that entitles every Arab citizen to feel that he or she is in fact a citizen, and not just a sheep in some great shepherd’s flock.”

I believe in the power of democracy, especially living in the city that rings our liberty and independence and I will continue to stand in solidarity today and every day for the Palestinian community and I hope you’ll join me today and stand in solidarity with not just me but all of those that seek justice from injustice, because as the great 

Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” –you join me too, you are Palestinian now after all.– God Bless Palestine and God Bless America. Thank You.
