قراءة في كتاب ألشخصية العربية في ادب امريكا اللاتينية لمؤلفه الدكتور فاروق سلوم

قادني شغف البحث عن الكتب التي تبحث تاثير الشخصية واللغة العربية في بلدان المهجر وعبر نصيحة قيمة من احد الاصدقاء من الاساتذة المختصين بترجمة وتحليل الادب الاسباني الى كتاب الدكتور فاروق سلوم والذي يتعلق بصورة اساسية بأوصاف واحوال الشخصية العربية في ادب امريكا الاتينية والذي تعرفت من خلاله على ماكتبه الادباء اللاتينيين عن الشخصية العربية وكيف وصفوها وما هو تأثيرها في مجتمعاتهم , وحسب رأيي المتواضع ان مايجعل محور بحث الكتاب مميزا انه يوفر سردا ادبيا ضمنه وصف تاريخي عن الهجرات الاولى الى دول امريكا اللاتينية , فقد اورد الكتاب سردا ادبيا لوصف الشخصية العربية في روايات ادبية مهمة ولكتاب معروفين , وكما يقال فأن الادب هو مراة صادقة للشعوب والمجتمعات , والحقيقة ان ماابهرني هو ماانعكس في تلك الروايات من اوصاف للشخصية العربية, كذلك فان من المهم ان اذكر ان عدد من هؤلاء الكتاب المعروفين في امريكا اللاتينية اثروا فينا عندما كانت اعمالهم الادبية تصل الى ايدينا في بلداننا الام في مرحلة القراءات الاولى .
يبدأ الكاتب في توطئة كتابه بنقل مقولة للكاتب البرازيلي جورج امادو مضمونها ” أن الدم العربي لعب دورا من اكبر الادوار شأنا في ديمقراطيتنا العرقية, في مساهمتنا في الثقافة العالمية , وفي نزوعنا الانساني. لقد اندمج السوريون واللبنانيون والعرب من البقاع الاخرى ايضا مع البرتغالي والزنجيومع السلافي والاسباني في هذا الخليط العجيب الذي انجب الانسان البرازيلي, وفي وسط هؤلاء كان العربي برازيليا صميميا منذ اليوم الاول”
وهذه المقولة تمثل شهادة انسانية وادبية مهمة بحق تفاعل الانسان العربي مع بيئاته الجديدة وكيف ان هذا التفاعل كان صميميا حتى ان العرب قد ولجوا في مختلف ميادين الحياة وباتت الشخصية العربية مؤثرة, والاهم من ذلك ان دول المهجر اتسعت حدودها بشكل كبير اذ ان حدودها اصبحت متصلة بشكل او باخر ببلدان المهاجرين الاصلية مما عمق مفهوم التنوع الثقافي والاجتماعي والادبي.
أتخذ المؤلف منهجا جديدا في الدراسات المقارنة ضمن كتابه لم يلتفت اليه احد سابقا اسماه ( ألاثر الاجنبي من الداخل) والمقصود بهذات المصطح حسب راي الكاتب هو تأثير الجاليات الاجنبية المقيمة في سيرتها وطبيعة حياتها في صياغة شخصيات ادب امة من الامم وليس من خلال ادبها او صحافتها.
يورد المؤلف ان كتاب امريكا اللاتينية قد وجدوا في السلوك العربي هذا وفي مظهر الشخصية الجذاب الذي يتجسد في جمال العينين والشعر الاسود ولون البشرة والمظهر العام مما جعلهم يجدون فيها شخصية جديدة لاتتوفر في بيئتهم الاجتماعية, وبذلك نقل الكاتب في امريكا اللاتينية هذا النموذج البشري وضمنه شخصيات رواياته وابقاه عربيا في سلوكه وتصرفه بل وفي اسمه ايضا كما يضيف مؤلف الكتاب.

A reading of the book, The Arab Personality in Latin American Literature by Dr. Farouk Salloum

I remember all of the different interests that led me to Dr. Farouk Salloum’s book, The Arab Personality in Latin American Literature. I have a keen interest in writing that examines the influence of Arabic language on individual personality in the countries of Arab Diaspora. A very good friend, who is a professor specializing in translating and analyzing Spanish literature, knows of this interest, and pointed me to Dr. Salloum’s book. The Arab Personality in Latin American Literature. Dr. Solloum’s book provides a compelling survey of the conditions shaping Arab personality in the literature of Latin America.
Dr. Salloum examines Latin writers’ portrayal of the Arab personality, how those writers describe it, and the manner in which Arab populations impact Latin society. As a reader, I find the book’s research special. It provides a literary narrative that includes a historical description of the first Arab migrations to Latin American countries. This literary narrative traces Arab personality through Latin literature and draws from culturally significant, local writers. It calls to mind the aphorism: “Literature is an honest mirror for peoples and societies.” I was very impressed with the manner in which these narratives describe Arab personality. And while a number of these writers are well-known in Latin America, oftentimes the statements their literature makes about Arab culture diffuses to us at home. These literary works often reach our hands in our mother countries, and we are delighted to look into the mirror that literature holds up for us.
In the preface to his book, Dr. Salloum quotes Brazilian writer George Amado, who says, “Arab blood played one of the greatest roles in our ethnic democracy, in our contribution to global culture, and in our human tendency. The Syrians, the Lebanese, and the Arabs from other parts also merged with the Portuguese, the Slavs, and the Spaniards.” This eclectic mix gave birth to Brazilian personality, and at the heart of it, we find Arab Brasilia–present from the very first day.
Amado’s observation represents an important testimony to the beautiful manner in which Arab expats interact with their new countries. Amado’s quote demonstrates how this interaction can be very intimate as Arabs become part of a new community. Occupying professions, starting businesses, and celebrating our rich culture provides an entrance into the various fields of life in new countries. As Arab contributions diffuse, the countries of the Diaspora find the notion of their borders expanded. Geographical personality expands to include the countries of origin of immigrants, whose considerable contributions add depth and connections to the local culture, literature, and social fabric.
I am most struck with Dr. Salloum’s groundbreaking comparative studies approach in which he observes Arab cultural diffusion. Dr. Salloum frames his new approach as “Inside Foreign Influence,” which provides an examination that no academic has previously observed. According to Dr. Salloum, Inside Foreign Influence occurs when foreign communities influence characterization in a nation’s literature. Rather than foreign communities providing direct literature or journalism, Inside Foreign Influence occurs when foreign communities so fully occupy their biography and their lives that well-written, accurate, literary characters embody this immigrant experience.
Dr. Salloum notes that Latin American writers look to Arab behavior and appearance in their literary characterizations. Examples of this include beautiful eyes, black hair, skin color, and general presentation providing a wealth of representation upon which a nation’s writers may draw to portray the attractive Arab personality. These characteristics provide powerful influences to writers looking for new personalities outside of their usual social environment. Latin American writers looked to Arab behavior and names as living models for their novels. In this manner, Dr. Salloum notes, Inside Foreign Influence drives writers to expand their own boundaries of characterization and personality.
