التواصل هو شكل من أشكال النشاط البشري. في الواقع هو يحتاج إلى مهارات كبيرة. عادة ماتكون العلاقة بين المرسل والمتلقي موجودة ولكن على مستويات مختلفة خاصة مع مجتمع متنوع يحتاج إلى رسائل هادفة, مباشرة وفعالة.
ما يميز التواصل في الوقت الحاضر هو التنوع في الهويات والثقافات ، وهذا يضيف بعدًا آخر لمفهوم التواصل وكيفية تحقيقه لأن موضوع التواصل يطرح نفسه بقوة في كل ثقافة إنسانية.
افترض انه لا يوجد مجتمع بدون تنوع وخاصة مجتمع مثل مدينة فيلادلفيا الذي يمثل أعلى درجات التنوع الفكري والثقافي نظريًا وعلميًا، وهذا التنوع في التواصل يوفر فرصة مناسبة جدًا للوصول إلى العديد من الافكار والحلول. يشحذ التفكير النقدي ويقلل من الركود الاجتماعي. بدلاً من أن يكون الجدل ظاهرة هامشية، سيكون الجدل محركًا للتقدم الفكري والعملي.
عندما تسأل مجموعة من الناس: ما رأيك؟ تنقسم الإجابات إلى نوعين، بطبيعة الحال إما اجابة مثيرة للجدل أو تقليدية، ويمكن القول أن النوعين يمثلان انعكاسًا للمعتقدات والثقافات ، وفي نهاية هذا الجدل، ستثبت فرضية معينة صحتها أو خطأها. ان الآراءعادة ماتكون مبنية على العواطف والدوافع وليس على الحقائق، تستند إلى قصص يمكن أن تكون خاطئة في معظم الحالات وهذه هي الاشاعة.
وبناءا على هذا فإن رسالة الصحيفة مهمة للغاية في بناء جسور التواصل و إحداث تغيير في القناعات. هذه العلاقة بين مكونات المشاركة والتواصل تؤمن صناعة المعلومات الصحيحة والحقيقية ويجب أن تكون هذه العلاقة تفاعلية وتكاملية وحميمة ومتبادلة أيضًا، مما يعني أن المجتمع يمكن أن يفيد الصحيفة بمعلومات معينة اعتمادا على التواصل الفعال كون المجتمع هو الغاية والوسيلة.
