كما تحدثت كندرا بروكس، عضوة مجلس مدينة فيلادلفيا، إلى الجمهور. حيث أشارت الى أهمية دور أولياء الأمور في تحسين المدارس. وأضافت عضوة المجلس انها بدأت حياتها السياسية بالعمل على تحسين مدارس أطفالها. نصحت أولياء الأمور المشاركين في التجمع والمسيرة بالدفاع عن أطفالهم بالإضافة إلى دعم أي مجموعة من الأطفال في النظام المدرسي الذين لا يحصلون على تعامل بشكل عادل. وأوصت بأن أفضل طريقة لدعم الأطفال هي حضور الاجتماعات العامة في المدارس وفي مقر المنطقة التعليمية لمدينة فيلادلفيا والتي تقع في العنوان 440 نورث برود ستريت.

Public education is a huge reason for the success of the United States. Schools can create safe environments and open opportunities for our children. However, teachers can sometimes cause damage to a child, especially if that child is not white. Recently, students and teachers from Philadelphia came together to host the Students & Teachers March for Black Lives. This event raised awareness of the difficulties that students of color from all nationalities face in attending school.
Speakers at this event included students and teachers. Students shared stories of how racism by teachers and principals have affected their education. Teachers mentioned many times that the School District of Philadelphia has failed to support their schools.
Philadelphia city councilwoman Kendra Brooks also spoke to the crowd. She shared the importance of parents in improving schools. She began her political career by working to improve her own children’s schools. She advised parents in the crowd to stand up for their own children as well as supporting any group of children in the school system who are not treated fairly. She recommended the best way to support children is to attend public meetings in schools and at the School District Headquarters at 440 N. Broad Street.
The march was put together by several organizations including the Melanated Educators Collective. This group works to improve education for all students, starting with students of color. You can find their list of 10 demands for the School District of Philadelphia online.
